"What we do for ourselves dies with us.
What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal."

A Little About Me
My name is Sonya McCoy and I am a native Cincinnatian. I graduated from Walnut Hills High School and earned my bachelor's degree at Northern Kentucky University. Additionally, I have a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Phoenix, and am certified to teach both general and special education via The College of Mt. St. Joseph. I have 2 adult children and 3 grandchildren who are the lights of my life.
I am an experienced educator and have taught in several states, in a variety of settings, including elementary, middle school and high school. I am also an adjunct professor at Cincinnati State University. I am looking forward to sharing a wide variety of learning experiences with my students this year!

My Philosophy
I believe good teaching in the 21st century requires more than simply delivering lessons from textbooks. This is why I make every effort to address the needs of the whole child. In order to survive and be successful in school and in life, students must be prepared to face the many challenges that await them in today's world.
In my classroom I treat each student as an individual. My overall goal is to help each one of my students capitalize on their strengths and help them strengthen their weaknesses. I set and maintain high standards for myself as well as for my students. Although my classroom expectations are high, I never ask more of my students than what I know they are capable of producing.
In an effort to foster independence in my students, I believe they should be held accountable for their own learning to the greatest extent possible. To accomplish this, there must be mutual respect between students and teacher.
Through the use of technology and innovative delivery methods while using traditional educational materials, I strive to make learning fun, engaging and real-world pertinent. I want my students to be challenged, but not frustrated. In my classroom, students gain confidence and learn to trust themselves so they are more likely to take risks and learn from their mistakes.
Because I want to inspire my students to become lifelong learners, I exemplify this characteristic myself. I continually pursue new learning for myself and take advantage of available professional development opportunities. I share my own learning experiences with my students.
Finally, I view my students, their parents and myself as members of the same team, working toward a common goal. Each of us has a role to play. If we play it to the best of our ability and work together, we all win.
