Bullying
COCA, the Council on Child Abuse, visited our classroom.
We had a great class discussion about bullying behaviors.
This is a student-generated list of “Bully Words” and “Power Words” when Kim from COCA visited our classroom last year:
BULLY WORDScussing
lame jerk idiot/retard stupid punk ugly geek loser monkey |
POWER WORDS“Hi!”
“You doing ok?” “You’re smart.” “Thank you.” “Awesome!” “Great Job!” “You’re funny.” “Nice shoes.” “You're nice.” “Sweet!” |
We reviewed "The 3 Rs" in regard to bullying (Recognize. Refuse. Report.)
We pledged to only call our classmates by their first names.
We talked about the 5 types of bullying.
We also discussed strategies for dealing with bullies:
· Put your shoulders back and chin up, and say, “Call me by my name.”
· Don’t be angry, be assertive.
· The less you react, the more confident you appear.
· WITNESSES are HEROES! They report to a trusted adult.
